Description

About the painting. Witches' Sabbath (El Aquelarre) shows the Devil as a great black goat crowned with leaves, receiving children from a circle of witches under a crescent moon, with the bodies of earlier offerings hung from a stick. Painted by Goya in 1798 for the Duchess of Osuna's country house, it is the small, terrible rehearsal for the Black Paintings. It hangs in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid.

Goya painted Witches’ Sabbath in 1798 as one of six scenes of witchcraft for the Duke and Duchess of Osuna’s country house outside Madrid, at a time when the Inquisition still tried witches and his Enlightenment friends laughed at it. The Devil sits in the middle as a huge black goat with vine leaves in his horns, and the witches around him hold up their children: a plump baby offered by its mother, a starved one held by an old woman, and, on a stick at the left, the ones that came before. Bats cross a crescent moon. It is a small canvas and it is one of the most frightening things Goya ever made, twenty years before the Black Paintings.

The original is in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the original.
