Description
A lion attacks a pale horse at the foot of a rocky hillside. The horse bends low, its legs gathered beneath it as the lion lunges from the left. Dark clouds and uneven stone surround the struggle, and a small patch of lighter ground appears near the animals. Their bodies occupy the lower portion of the scene beneath a heavy sky.
About Yale – a Lion Attacking a Horse Reproduction
Brown and grey shadows dominate, with light catching the flank and the of the horse mane of the lion. The animals limbs overlap, but the pale coat of the horse remains distinct against the dark terrain. The cloud forms build upward behind them, while rocks and sparse plants anchor the foreground. The contrast of bright hide and shadow gives the encounter its strongest visual emphasis.
The sloping rock face guides the eye down toward the animals, concentrating the action near the lower center. The bent shape of the horse and forward posture of the lion create opposing forces. The dark atmosphere leaves the illuminated bodies as the principal focus. The pale horse bends low while the lion presses over its back, the two bodies forming a tight diagonal against the dark rocks. A pale clearing behind the animals separates their silhouettes from the heavy tree mass. The force of the encounter is carried by the twisted legs of the horse and the lowered head of the lion.
