A boy who cannot go in

A poor village boy stands in the doorway of a rural school, looking in at the pupils bent over their desks. He holds a stick and wears torn clothes and bast shoes. He is outside the lesson, and the painting makes us feel the distance.

Rags and a bundle

We see the boy from behind. His coat is patched and torn at the elbows, and a cloth bundle and a bag hang from his shoulder. He looks like a child who wanders from village to village, perhaps begging.

His legs are wrapped in cloth, and he wears bast shoes woven from bark, the footwear of the poorest peasants.

The lesson goes on without him

Inside, boys sit in rows at wooden desks, heads bent over their work. None of them notices the boy at the door.

On the wall hang a map, a printed notice and a blackboard. A lamp hangs from the ceiling. The plain wooden room is warm and bright compared with the shadowy doorway.

A painter who was once that boy

Bogdanov-Belsky was born into a poor peasant family. He studied at a village school run by the educator Sergei Rachinsky, who encouraged his talent. Schools and village children became his main subject, and this painting is often linked to his own childhood.
