Description

Deep violet plums meet the dusty blue-grey bloom of grapes, and against them the melon glows a warm amber-green, its rind catching a raking light that plums and grapes absorb rather than reflect. Willem van Aelst builds this whole still life from that friction of colour: cool bloom against warm rind, the muted ochre of fig flesh sitting quietly between the two louder notes. Nothing in the arrangement is accidental. Once you see how the palette is constructed, you start to understand why the composition sits so comfortably on the eye.

About Still Life with Grapes Plums Figs

Painted in 1653, the work shows fruit gathered along a stone ledge, part of it draped in cloth that falls in a soft diagonal across the hard horizontal of the stone. That drapery does real work in the composition: it breaks the rigidity of the ledge and gives the rounded fruit forms something linear to push against. Van Aelst arranges grapes, plums, figs, and melon with an eye for how each shape catches or refuses light, building a rhythm of curves interrupted by the fold of fabric.

What sets this apart from other Dutch still life painting of the period is the discipline of the surface handling. The bloom on the grapes is a powdery, almost breathable film; the plum skin holds a waxy sheen that seems to sit a fraction above the paint beneath it; the rough, netted rind of the melon is built up with a different, coarser touch entirely. Van Aelst was among the most technically exacting still life painters working in the Dutch Republic in the mid seventeenth century, and this canvas belongs to the period when his control over texture and light was at its most assured.

The hand-painted reproduction

Our painters study the original closely before they begin, matching that same interplay of cool bloom and warm rind stroke by stroke rather than approximating it from a photograph. This is a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, built up in layers of real oil colour on canvas, so the ridge of a brushstroke across the melon rind or the soft blur where plum meets shadow survives exactly as van Aelst laid it down. That fidelity to touch and texture is what separates a museum quality reproduction from a flat copy, and it is what we ask of every canvas that leaves our studio.
