The painting shows the fellow artist Achille Emperaire seated in a wooden chair, his elongated frame folded into a space too small for him, dressed in a patterned robe that recalls the grandeur of official portraiture even as the pose undercuts it. Thick, dark outlines pin the figure against a mustard and ochre ground, and the paint is applied with a heaviness that owes more to Courbet and to the Spanish masters Cezanne admired than to the broken colour he would later develop alongside the Impressionists. Light falls unevenly across the face and hands, catching the texture of the robe while leaving the background flat and airless, a deliberate imbalance that gives the sitter his strange, cramped authority.
