Description
Aeolus, keeper of the winds, gave Odysseus a bag of ox hide with every wind in it but the one that would blow him home, and told him to keep it shut. Isaac Moillon, a French painter of the mid-seventeenth century best known for tapestry designs, painted the handing over: the wind god on his rock, the bag between them, the hero receiving it, and the ships waiting below. Nine days later the crew would open it within sight of Ithaca.
It is a rare subject in painting and a handsome Baroque composition, with the drama supplied by what the viewer knows will happen. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the original.
