About the painting. Anna Passini on the Balcony of the Palazzo Priuli shows the painter's young wife on a carved Gothic balcony above a Venetian canal in spring, beside a crumbling brick wall. Ludwig Passini painted it in 1866, the year Anna, a great-great-granddaughter of Moses Mendelssohn, died at twenty-five. It is in a private collection.
Ludwig Passini painted his wife Anna on the balcony of their home in the Palazzo Priuli in Venice in 1866. She sits on a red cushion in a white dress and looks down at the canal, under Gothic tracery carved like lace, beside a wall where the plaster is falling away. It is spring. They had married in 1864; Anna, a great-great-granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, died in 1866, at twenty-five.
Passini was a Viennese painter who spent his life in Italy and painted Venice brick by brick. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the original, in its tall format, with the architecture laid in stroke by stroke.
