By the 1880s, George Hendrik Breitner had turned away from the pastoral scenes favoured by his Hague School contemporaries and toward the theatres, streets, and working quarters of Amsterdam, where artificial light and urban movement offered a different kind of subject. Ballerina belongs to this period of restless observation, when the painter was drawn less to posed elegance than to the fleeting energy of performance caught under gaslight.
