A famous painting by Hendrick Van Balen, Diana Resting after the Hunt brings the soft, dappled calm of the Flemish Baroque into any room.
Description
Description
Picture this scene in a quiet study or a bedroom that catches afternoon light: dappled greens, warm flesh tones, and a mood of settled calm after exertion. Diana Resting after the Hunt brings a soft, wooded stillness into a room, the kind of painting that rewards a second and third look rather than announcing itself from across the space.
About Diana Resting After the Hunt
Hendrick Van Balen sets his goddess among attendants and foliage in a composition built on the contrast between rest and the chase just finished. Diana reclines with the loose-limbed ease of someone who has earned her pause, while the surrounding figures and greenery keep a faint pulse of movement running through the scene. Light falls in soft, broken patches across skin and drapery, the kind of dappled illumination that Flemish painters of this period handled with particular sensitivity.
Van Balen worked within the Antwerp tradition, and this picture shows the refinement that made him sought after for mythological subjects: idealised, graceful figures, richly observed natural detail, and a lyrical serenity that never tips into stiffness. It belongs to a body of work admired well beyond its own century, a famous painting in the genre of pastoral mythology that continues to draw attention in collections and reproductions alike.
The hand-painted reproduction
Each ByMuseum reproduction is a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, not a printed copy. A trained artist works in oil on artist-grade canvas, matching the palette of Van Balen and rebuilding the layered glazes and soft tonal transitions by hand, so the surface carries genuine brushwork and texture rather than a flat printed image. Hung on a wall, it holds light the way the original does, shifting gently as the room changes through the day, which is exactly what makes it suited to a space you sit in often and want to keep discovering.
