Description
Water still runs off the goddess when the hunter blunders into the clearing. Diana raises her hand, the hounds scatter, and Actaeon feels the first change take hold, antlers pushing through his hair before he understands what is happening to him. Hendrick Van Balen catches that instant and holds it, the moment before myth becomes punishment.
About Diana Turns Actaeon Into a Stag
The story comes from Ovid, a favourite source for painters working in Antwerp in the early seventeenth century, and Van Balen builds it as a crowded, decorative scene rather than a grim one. Diana stands among her attendants at the edge of a pool, their bodies pale against dark foliage, while Actaeon recoils at the far side of the group. The figures are long-limbed and posed with a dancers sense of balance, a trait carried over from the Antwerp Mannerist tradition in which Van Balen trained. Colour does much of the storytelling: cool blues and greens for the water and woods, warm flesh tones for the nymphs, small notes of red and gold to draw the eye through the composition.
Van Balen worked often in small format and on copper as well as canvas, and he had a reputation for this kind of mythological subject, populated, ornamental, faintly theatrical. The woodland setting is dense but never cluttered; every tree and shadow is placed to frame the human drama at the centre. It is a painting built for close looking, rewarding anyone who traces the line from Diana raised hand to the first curve of antler on Actaeon head.
ByMuseum recreates this scene as a hand-painted oil painting reproduction, worked by a trained artist directly on canvas rather than printed. The palette is matched by eye, layer by layer, so the cool jewel tones of the original survive, and the brushwork stays visible on the surface, giving the woodland its depth and the figures their modelled flesh. The result is a hand-painted replica meant to be seen up close, not a flat copy viewed from across a room.

It suits a reader of myth, a collector drawn to Flemish narrative painting, or anyone who wants a room with a story hidden in its corners rather than announced at its centre.
