Description
A young woman stands in profile at an open window, a letter held in both hands, her face lit by daylight that falls across her cheek and the pale wall behind her. This Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window reproduction recreates that light exactly as it now appears in the restored Dresden original, with the long-hidden Cupid watching over her from the wall.
About Girl Reading a Letter Reproduction
Painted by Johannes Vermeer around 1657 to 1659, early in his career, the composition is built from a few deliberate elements: the sitter turned away from the viewer, a richly patterned Oriental rug draped across a table in the foreground, and a heavy green curtain pulled to one side as though someone has just drawn it back to look in. The window stands open, and the glass holds a faint reflection of the girl, a detail that rewards a close look rather than announcing itself. Light enters from the left and moves across the wall in the kind of graded, almost granular passage that defines the handling of Vermeer in this period, before his compositions grew more crowded with figures and furnishings.
For nearly three hundred years that wall appeared blank. Between 2017 and 2021, conservators at the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden removed overpaint added long after the death of the artist and uncovered a painting within the painting, a figure of Cupid holding a bow and arrow. The discovery changes the reading of the letter itself, suggesting it carries a declaration of love rather than ordinary news, and the restored version shown here is now how the work is displayed to the public.
The hand-painted reproduction
ByMuseum artists work from the fully restored composition, matching the palette and the particular grey light of the wall by hand in oil on canvas. This is a museum quality reproduction built stroke by stroke rather than printed, with the weave of the rug, the fall of the curtain, and the newly visible Cupid all rendered in layered oil colour so the brushwork and surface texture read as they do in the original.
