Description

Ilya Repin’s Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 16 November 1581 is one of the most emotionally devastating paintings in the history of Russian art. Completed in 1885 after nearly three years of work, the canvas depicts the immediate aftermath of a fatal blow: Tsar Ivan IV, overcome with horror and grief, cradles the bleeding body of his son and heir, whom he has just struck down in a fit of rage. The contrast between the Tsar’s wild, desperate eyes — wide with the sudden comprehension of what he has done — and the pale, fading expression of the dying Tsarevich creates an unbearable psychological tension that has transfixed viewers for over a century.

Repin constructed the composition with extraordinary care, flooding the scene with a raking, theatrical light that draws the eye immediately to the two interlocked figures. Rich crimson tones — the red carpet, the spreading blood — dominate the palette, lending the work an almost operatic intensity. Every detail, from the Tsar’s frantic grip to the Tsarevich’s limp, surrendering hand, was researched and rendered with the unflinching precision that defines Russian Realism at its peak.

Our hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction faithfully captures all of these qualities. Skilled studio artists work from high-resolution archival references to replicate Repin’s layered brushwork, his nuanced tonal transitions, and the visceral color relationships that give the original its raw power. Each reproduction is painted on premium linen canvas using professional-grade oil paints, then inspected for accuracy before shipping.
