Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee’s La Belle Dame sans Merci takes its subject from John Keats’ 1819 ballad of the same name. The painting shows a young knight in polished armour who leans back with arms thrown open, appearing to surrender himself to the mysterious lady bending down toward him from atop a dark, richly caparisoned horse. She wears a flowing gown and a crown of pale flowers in her hair, her expression enigmatic as she extends herself toward him while her gaze seems distant.
