Jan Both spent his formative years in Italy, and the Roman campagna never quite left his eye even after he returned north to Utrecht. Here he arranges his trees and rising ground so that light travels diagonally across the canvas, catching the woman and her mount while the foreground falls into cooler shadow. The composition is patient rather than dramatic: broad, glowing sky above, a loose scatter of foliage and rock leading the gaze toward the middle distance, and small figures who animate the scene without ever dominating it.
