A young woman bathes in a secluded garden while two old men watch from the shadows, unseen and uninvited. The story of Susanna comes from the Book of Daniel, and it gave Baroque painters licence to explore the drama of the innocent watched, the tension between virtue and threat, and the play of a figure caught in a private moment. About Susanna and the Elders
The composition places Susanna against a screen of foliage and stone, her figure lit with a warmth that separates her from the elders lurking at the edge of the scene. Both builds the space in stages, leading the eye from the pale flesh tones of the central figure out to the darker greens and browns of the garden beyond. The light has the golden, late-afternoon quality that runs through his landscape work, softening the drama without dulling it.
