Description
About the painting. The fifth scene of Marriage A-la-Mode: in a room at the Turk's Head bagnio after the masquerade, the Earl has drawn his sword on the lawyer and lost; he falls with the blood spreading on his shirt, the Countess kneels, Silvertongue climbs out of the window and the watch bursts in with a lantern. It hangs in the National Gallery in London with the other five scenes.
The fifth scene of Marriage A-la-Mode is the only one lit by candle. The Earl has followed his wife and her lover to a bagnio after the masquerade, drawn his sword, and lost. He is falling with the blood spreading on his shirt; the Countess kneels and begs; Silvertongue, in his nightshirt, is climbing out of the window; the masks and the masquerade clothes are on the floor; and the watch and the landlord have burst in at the door with a lantern. On the wall behind them a tapestry shows the Judgement of Solomon.
It is Hogarth’s tragedy, staged like a play in its last act. The original is in the National Gallery in London. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the National Gallery original.
