Description
A figure in brilliant red leans out of darkness, smiling as if he already knows the answer. Eduard von Grützner painted Mephisto in 1895, presenting Goethe’s tempter as a theatrical character whose intelligence and charm are more unsettling than any monstrous disguise.
About the Mephisto painting
The original is signed and dated 1895. It is an oil painting on canvas measuring 44 × 36 centimetres and is held in a private collection. Grützner places the figure against a nearly black background, concentrating the composition on the pale face, red stage costume, feathered cap and sword. The restrained smile turns the portrait into a study of persuasion and concealed danger.
The hand-painted reproduction
ByMuseum artists recreate Mephisto by hand in oil on canvas. Layered brushwork preserves the contrast between the dense black ground and saturated red costume, along with the face’s fine modelling and the worn texture of the clothing. Each reproduction is painted to order and individually checked before shipping.
