Grey dominates this canvas, but it is a grey built from blues, silvered lavenders, and warm umbers that shift with every few inches of pavement. The wet cobblestones catch reflected light in streaks of pale ochre and cool violet, while the dark silhouettes of umbrellas punctuate the scene in near-black, their curved forms breaking up the horizontal drift of the street. Caillebotte lets these darks sit hard against the softened, rain-damp middle tones, so the eye keeps moving between the crisp foreground figures and the dissolving buildings behind them.
