About Reclining Nude

George Hendrik Breitner painted the female nude repeatedly in the 1880s and 1890s, working against the polished academic tradition of his day in favour of something more immediate. In Reclining Nude the figure occupies a shallow, informally arranged space, the pose relaxed rather than posed for effect, the surrounding fabric and shadow handled with the same broken, energetic brushwork as the body itself. Light falls unevenly across the scene, gathering in patches on the skin and dissolving into darker, more thickly worked passages around the edges of the composition.

This looseness of touch is what marks the painting as a work of Dutch Impressionism rather than a studio exercise in anatomy.
