The face emerges from a darkened ground, built up in close, earthen tones that let the features surface gradually rather than announce themselves. Light falls unevenly across the brow and cheekbone, leaving much of the composition in shadow, a choice that draws attention to the psychological weight of the sitter rather than to surface polish. This is characteristic of Breitner working at the height of his powers, when his Impressionist instincts for atmosphere and movement were increasingly turned toward the study of individual character.
