Description
Deep bonfire orange meets the cool blue-green of a midsummer lake in this composition by Nikolai Astrup, the two tones held apart by the dark silhouettes of trees and the pale flicker of figures gathered at the shore. Yellow flame licks upward against a sky gone soft with the long light of a Norwegian June evening, and that warmth pushes hard against the surrounding cool, giving the whole picture the charged, slightly restless feeling of a celebration caught at its peak.
About St. Hansb?L Ved J?Lstervatnet
St. Hansb?l ved J?lstervatnet depicts the traditional midsummer bonfire held on the shores of Lake J?lstervatnet, a subject Astrup returned to across his career because it let him fuse folk custom with the particular light of his native Jolster. Figures cluster near the fire in loose, almost schematic strokes, more presence than portrait, while the water and hillside beyond are built from broader passages of colour that read as much as pattern as landscape. The perspective tilts slightly upward, a device Astrup favoured, which flattens the space and lets colour rather than depth carry the composition.
This handling of paint, thick in the fire and thinner in the surrounding dusk, belongs to the mature phase of the career of Astrup, when he had moved past his early academic training toward a personal, almost decorative Post-Impressionism shaped by Norwegian folk art and the woodcuts he was producing alongside his paintings. Edges are decisive where the fire meets the dark trees and softer where sky dissolves into water, a contrast that gives the picture its particular tension between control and release.
Recreating this balance by hand is the work of the ByMuseum studio, where trained painters produce each oil painting reproduction on artist-grade canvas, matching the orange and blue-green tension stroke by stroke and preserving the impasto of the firelight and the thinner washes of the surrounding dusk. This oil on canvas reproduction is built up in layered oil colour rather than printed, so the surface catches light the way the original does, with genuine texture underfoot the brush.
The hand-painted reproduction
A scene this particular to one place and one night has kept its hold on viewers because the colour still does the work a century on, and owning a painted version means living with that same friction of warm and cool rather than a flattened copy of it.
