Description
A ring of bonfire smoke drifts low across the fjord water, catching the pale gold of a midsummer night that never quite darkens into black. That single passage of hazy light against deep green hillside is where St. Hansbol begins, and it is worth pausing on before the eye moves outward to the gathered figures and the long curve of shoreline that frames them.
About St. Hansb?L
Painted during the years when Nikolai Astrup had returned to the steep farmland above Jolster and was building the visual language that would define his mature work, St. Hansbol takes as its subject the Norwegian midsummer bonfire festival, a folk custom he returned to across several canvases. The composition sets a dense foreground of figures and flame against a horizon barely dimmed by the near-endless daylight of the season, and it is this suspended, silvery light that gives the picture its particular tension between celebration and stillness. Astrup builds the scene in patches of saturated colour, ochres and deep blues laid beside one another with little blending, a method closer to the decorative flatness of folk art than to the atmospheric realism his Norwegian contemporaries favoured.
The intervals between the bonfire, the crowd, and the surrounding hills carry real weight in the design. Astrup was a meticulous planner of pictorial space, and the gaps he leaves between major forms slow the eye down, letting the quieter passages of hillside and water register alongside the central fire before the whole surface resolves into a single sustained image.
The hand-painted reproduction
Reproducing this on canvas asks for the same patience the original demanded in its making. Every hand-painted oil painting reproduction from ByMuseum is built up in layered oil colour by a trained painter working directly from the source image, matching the density of pigment in the bonfire smoke and the flatter, more graphic colour of the hillside behind it. Brushwork is left visible rather than smoothed away, so the surface catches light the way an oil painting does and not the way a print does. The aim throughout is fidelity to the original intervals of colour and pace that Astrup built so carefully, since altering them even slightly would flatten the very quality that makes the composition work.
