Edward Burne-Jones completed The Beguiling of Merlin between 1872 and 1877, and it stands today as one of the defining masterworks of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Housed in the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, England, the painting draws from Arthurian legend — specifically the enchantress Nimue’s seduction and imprisonment of the great wizard Merlin within a blossoming hawthorn tree. The scene is charged with a haunting, dreamlike tension: Merlin gazes upward with an expression of helpless resignation as Nimue reads aloud the very spells she learned from him, her posture cool, composed, and utterly in command.
Burne-Jones modelled Nimue on the Greek actress Maria Zambaco, with whom he shared a turbulent relationship, lending the work an unmistakable autobiographical undercurrent. The composition is strikingly vertical, the figures pressed close against a dense tapestry of hawthorn blossoms and serpentine branches that seem to close in around Merlin like a living cage. Every blossom, every fold of fabric, every strand of Nimue’s auburn hair is rendered with the meticulous devotion to surface and symbolism that defines Pre-Raphaelite painting at its height.
