Description
Three skeletons in black robes quietly tend a garden. One bends over a green watering can, another holds a flowering plant close to its face, and the third works with its back turned. Rows of individual pots fill an ochre landscape, making Hugo Simberg’s The Garden of Death both strange and unexpectedly tender.
This hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction recreates Simberg’s 1896 composition. The historical original is a small watercolour and gouache on paper, measuring 15.8 cm high by 17.5 cm wide, in the Finnish National Gallery / Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki. The original medium and dimensions describe the museum work; your reproduction is painted in oil on canvas in the size you select.
The contrast gives the picture its character. Pale skulls and fine skeletal hands stand out against the heavy black clothing, while the warm ground carries tiny blue flowers, red stems and unusual leaves. The central figure’s careful gesture changes the mood of the entire scene. These are gardeners occupied with fragile living things.
Choose from the available canvas sizes and framing options to suit your space. The composition works especially well where its smaller gestures can be appreciated at close range: the flower held between two hands, the watering can and the varied plants along the front bench. A larger reproduction makes those details easier to notice while keeping the full arrangement together.
Each reproduction is made to order. Your selected size and frame determine the finished presentation and price shown when ordering. Pair it with other works from our Hugo Simberg collection to explore his distinctive approach to vulnerability, imagination and care.
