About Large Pine
Paul Cezanne painted this scene during the years when he had turned decisively away from Impressionist spontaneity toward something more structural, building the landscape from small, repeated strokes that read almost like masonry. The pine dominates the foreground, its silhouette cut with a firmness that owes something to his study of Poussin, while the distant hills recede in cooler tones that flatten and compress the space rather than opening it.
