Mary kneels on bare earth, her cloak spread beneath the Christ Child in a gesture drawn from the visions of Saint Bridget of Sweden. Behind her, Joseph sits on a saddle with one leg crossed over the other, an ordinary pose for an extraordinary witness. Two shepherds stand to the side, one pointing toward the light that falls across the broken brick of the stable wall, while five angels in pale robes sing and play lutes in a line that reads almost like a frieze. Francesca built the scene with the same geometric calm he brought to his frescoes: figures set at measured intervals, faces modelled in cool, even light, and a Tuscan landscape of hills and a walled town opening beneath a pale sky behind them. The surface today is patchy in places, a condition explained variously as areas left unfinished at the death of the artist or as losses from past cleaning, and that history is part of what the panel now shows.
