About Washing Woman

George Hendrik Breitner painted working people with a directness that set him apart from more polished contemporaries. He trained his eye on labourers, servants, and street life in Amsterdam and The Hague, finding dignity in postures that other painters overlooked. In The washing woman, the figure is built from broad, confident strokes rather than fine detail, her form emerging from patches of grey, brown, and muted white that read as solid and true from a distance.
