George Catlin painted this double portrait of Wi jun jon, Pigeon’s Egg Head, a Distinguished Young Warrior after the young man had travelled east to Washington and returned home again, and the picture is built around that journey as much as around the man himself. One side of the composition shows him in the regalia he wore before he left; the other shows him remade by contact with the capital, in a plumed hat and a frock coat, holding a fan and an umbrella with the same unassuming ease he once held a pipe. Catlin was not composing a satire so much as recording a change he had witnessed and clearly found unsettling, and the plainness of his brushwork, the flat colour, the unfussy modelling of the face, serves that documentary purpose rather than any decorative one. It belongs to the years Catlin spent among the peoples of the Missouri River in the early 1830s, when he was working fast, often from life, to build the record that would become his Indian Gallery.
