The first of Hogarth's six scenes of Marriage A-la-Mode: the Earl of Squander sells his son, a City Alderman buys a title, the money is already on the table, and the couple being married sit with their backs to each other while the lawyer Silvertongue whispers to the bride. It hangs in the National Gallery in London with the other five scenes.
The first of the six paintings of Marriage A-la-Mode shows the deal being done. The Earl of Squander, gouty foot on a stool, points to his family tree; the Alderman in red reads the marriage settlement through his spectacles; the money is already out of its bags on the table. On the sofa the two people being married have turned away from each other, the Viscount admiring himself in the mirror, the bride threading her ring through her handkerchief while the lawyer Silvertongue whispers in her ear. At their feet two dogs are chained together at the neck.
Hogarth painted the series around 1743 to be engraved, and the paintings hang together in the National Gallery in London. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the National Gallery original, and the six scenes can be ordered singly or as a set.
