About the painting. The fourth scene of Marriage A-la-Mode: the old Earl is dead, the new Countess holds a morning levée while her hair is dressed, an Italian singer performs, a lady faints with pleasure, and the lawyer Silvertongue on the sofa points to a masquerade screen and holds out a ticket. It hangs in the National Gallery in London with the other five scenes.
The fourth scene of Marriage A-la-Mode is the Countess’s levée. The old Earl is dead, the coronet is now on her bed and her mirror, and she receives guests while her hair is dressed. An Italian singer performs to a flute, a lady in white faints with pleasure, a gentleman sleeps, and the lawyer Silvertongue lies on the sofa pointing to a painted screen of a masquerade and holding out a ticket. On the floor a page boy laughs at a small figure of Actaeon with horns on his head. The paintings on the wall show Jupiter and Io, and Lot with his daughters.
Everything in the room has been bought at auction and everything in it is a hint. The original is in the National Gallery in London. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the National Gallery original.
