Commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508, the Sistine Chapel ceiling took Michelangelo four years to complete, with the full work unveiled on October 31, 1512. Covering approximately 5,000 square feet of curved ceiling surface, the composition features nine central scenes drawn from the Book of Genesis, flanked by figures of prophets, sibyls, and ancestors of Christ. Michelangelo worked primarily from scaffolding he designed himself, painting in the demanding buon fresco technique, which required applying pigment directly onto wet plaster before it dried.
The ceiling is divided into a complex architectural framework of painted illusionistic cornices and pilasters. The central panels progress from the Separation of Light from Darkness to the story of Noah, with the Creation of Adam sitting at the approximate midpoint. That panel, depicting two nearly touching hands, has become one of the most reproduced images in the world. Michelangelo used foreshortening and muscular figuration drawn from his training as a sculptor, giving the figures a weight and physicality unusual in fresco work of that period. The colors, revealed more fully after a restoration completed in 1994, are considerably brighter than centuries of candle soot had previously suggested.
