The subject is Mont Sainte Victoire itself, the limestone ridge near Aix-en-Provence that occupied Cezanne obsessively through the later part of his career, painted and repainted as he searched for a way to hold light, structure, and atmosphere in the same breath. Here the mountain sits within a composition of patchwork fields, pine, and sky, each plane built from small, faceted strokes of colour that read individually as blocks of pigment and collectively as air and distance. Cezanne was working at a point where description had given way to construction; he was less interested in copying appearance than in finding the underlying architecture of a view, and this painting shows that ambition in full flight.
