Description
Arnold Böcklin places a long, crowded boat at the left and a towering figure on the rocks at the right in Odysseus and Polyphemus. Oars project from the vessel toward the shore, while its passengers turn toward the rocky figure. A narrow strip of water separates them, making the space between boat and cliff feel exposed. The giant bends over the edge and raises a large stone above his head. In the foreground, foam breaks around the rock ledges, tying the threat above to the movement of the sea below.
About Odysseus and Polyphemus Reproduction
The horizontal format gives the scene room to unfold from the boat through the water to the figure. The boat sits low and close to the viewer, its dark hull and warm interior filled with small figures, shields and oars. Beyond it, repeated white crests lead toward a flat horizon. The giant is cropped by the upper edge and right side, emphasizing his scale without showing all of him. Pale sky and water open behind the action, while the stone outcrops divide the space into uneven steps.
