Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin of the Rocks places the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, the infant Saint John, and an angel within an imagined rocky grotto. Two principal versions of the composition survive, now in the Louvre Museum and the National Gallery in London.
The figures form a stable pyramidal group, yet their glances and gestures create a flowing exchange across the scene.
