Description

About the painting. The last scene of Marriage A-la-Mode: in her father's house by old London Bridge the Countess has taken laudanum after reading of Silvertongue's hanging; the nurse lifts her sick child for a last kiss, the apothecary blames the servant, a starving dog steals the pig's head and the Alderman pulls the ring from her finger. It hangs in the National Gallery in London with the other five scenes.

The last scene of Marriage A-la-Mode returns to where the money came from: the Alderman’s plain house by old London Bridge. The Countess has poisoned herself with laudanum after reading of her lover’s hanging; the pamphlet of his last dying speech lies at her feet. An old nurse holds up her child, a girl with a black patch and a leg brace, for a last kiss. The Alderman, thinking of the estate, is already pulling the ring from his daughter’s finger. The apothecary scolds the servant who fetched the poison, and a starving dog steals the pig’s head from the table.

The series ends as it began, with a transaction. The original is in the National Gallery in London. Our hand-painted reproduction is made in oil on canvas from the National Gallery original.
