Description

Briton Rivière painted this haunting biblical scene in 1872, and it remains one of the most quietly powerful works of the Victorian era. Rather than depicting a moment of triumph, Rivière chose the dark hours of uncertainty, giving the image a psychological depth that continues to resonate with viewers today.

The painting shows Daniel alone in the den, kneeling with his head bowed and his hands clasped in prayer. There is no confrontation, no drama of survival on display — only a solitary figure surrounded by lions whose physical strength is fully evident even in their stillness. The tension between that latent power and the unbroken peace of the scene is where the meaning of the work lives. For the original audience at the Royal Academy in 1872, this image spoke directly to questions of faith under pressure and the cost of personal conviction.

Rivière lit the den with a cool, filtered glow suggesting moonlight or a distant torch. Long shadows fall across the stone floor, and the forms of the lions emerge from the darkness through careful gradations of tone. The palette is deliberately cool and restrained, reinforcing the nocturnal setting and the weight of the moment. Rivière had been studying large cats at the Zoological Gardens in London, and the anatomical accuracy of each animal reflects that close observation without reducing the lions to mere props.

The artists at ByMuseum recreate this work entirely by hand in oil on canvas, studying the tonal gradations, the quality of the light source, and the texture of the original surface to produce a reproduction that carries the visual character of the painting held at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
