Description

About the painting. Saturn Devouring His Son shows the old god crouched in darkness, eyes wide with terror, tearing at the headless body of one of his children. Goya painted it straight onto the dining-room wall of his house outside Madrid, the Quinta del Sordo, between 1819 and 1823, for nobody but himself. It is the most famous of the fourteen Black Paintings. Painted 1819 to 1823 on the wall of the Quinta del Sordo, transferred to canvas 1874. 143.5 x 81.4 cm. Original in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.

Francisco De Goya approaches the named subject of Saturn Devouring His Son as a complete visual statement rather than a simple illustration. The structure balances immediate recognition with subtler transitions, so the viewer can move naturally through the surrounding pictorial space.

Francisco De Goya’s handling of tone, edge, and color gives the work its individual atmosphere. Changes in density across the image help separate primary forms from supporting areas while maintaining a unified overall design. This combination of structure and atmosphere gives the work a visual rhythm that remains engaging beyond the first impression.

Recreated by hand in oils, the composition is translated through layered color, worked edges, and a responsive painted surface. Because each canvas is painted individually, the result has natural variation, material depth, and a presence suited to collectors who prefer traditional workmanship over printing.
