Painted around 1657 to 1658, The Milkmaid is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it has been part of the collection since 1798. Vermeer completed it during an early period of his career when he was refining his approach to interior scenes. The painting is relatively small, measuring approximately 45.5 by 41 centimeters, yet it carries a sense of weight and stillness that draws viewers in. It depicts a kitchen maid pouring milk into an earthenware bowl, a task rendered with an attention to texture and material that was unusual for Dutch genre painting of the period.
Vermeer used a technique known as pointille, applying small dots of paint to suggest the rough surface of bread and the ceramic jug. The cool morning light enters from a window on the left, casting soft shadows across the wall and illuminating the maid from the side. X-ray analysis of the original has revealed that Vermeer initially included a basket on the wall and a figure near the window, both of which he painted over in the final composition.
