Rouen Cathedral, Full Sunlight

One façade, more than thirty paintings

In 1892 and 1893, Claude Monet rented rooms opposite the west front of Rouen Cathedral and painted it again and again, at different hours and in different weather. He finished the canvases in his studio at Giverny and exhibited twenty of them in Paris in 1895.

This version, often called Harmony in Blue and Gold or Full Sunlight, is dated 1894 and belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Stone turned into light

The Gothic portal and its rose window are barely drawn. Monet built the façade from thick, crusty layers of paint in cream, yellow, orange and blue. The surface almost resembles the rough stone itself.

His subject was not the cathedral’s architecture but the light falling on it at a given moment of the day.

Towers against a blue sky

At the top, the pinnacles and gables stand out against a patch of blue sky. The edges dissolve in the strong light.

At the right, the Saint-Romain tower is in shadow, painted in blues and violets. The contrast between sunlit stone and cool shadow is the core of the picture.

Signed and dated 94

Monet signed and dated the canvas “Claude Monet 94” at the lower left. Although he started the series on site, he reworked all the paintings in Giverny, comparing them side by side.
